Some things I've learned from HD/HUSKY/DAY9/WILDER.
Two things to consider when pushing!
1) Continue to build your army! The enemy is!
2) Expand your bases! The enemy's army is busy defending, you have control.
I always consider both of those things when I try a push..
If you're losing in a push, fall back.. I had a bunch of early matches where I'd just call the units lost and start replacing them.. But pulling them back is better... The small amount of damage they can do to the other army is most times too easily recuperated.
A failed attack, consider defense. A failed defense, game over.
Other than harass or rushes. I don't like defending. I spend the entire time thinking of "How can I kill you" rather than "How do I stop you killing me." (ie, RARELY base defense units)
Two bases: Goal is upgrades.. At two bases I should have attack +1 at least and considering +1 defense.
Three bases: +2 upgrades (+3 on attack only if I have tons of resources).
Bind your unit buildings together and then keep the rally point to a unit in your army or close to the action.. As I push, quick hotkeys can produce a large reinforcement wave.
See the map.. As zerg, I've got a huge edge. I try to move my Overlords around so they give more sight. And try to keep a ling on the xel'naga watch towers.
FLANK! Super useful! In a 2v2 with Swing I used lings to come up from behind on the enemy army to take out their tanks and colossi. Consider the enemy too..
